Running WireGuard without admin rights (evaluation server)

Problem

WireGuard is installed, but a standard (non-admin) Windows user cannot activate the tunnel.

Solution

Installing WireGuard requires administrator rights once. After that, an administrator can allow standard users to activate tunnels:

  1. Set the registry value HKLM\Software\WireGuard\LimitedOperatorUI to 1 (DWORD).

  2. Add the user to the local Network Configuration Operators group.

  3. Have the user sign out and in again.

  • Connect to the Probe server (VPN)
